CHALK is a music venue in located in the vibrant heart of Brighton, East Sussex. It is located in the coach station opposite Brighton’s
iconic pier.
They asked us to create some VIP booth seating and drum stools for their thriving nightclub.
CHALK is one of the city’s most distinctive live music and club venues. They run club nights and host live music performances from local indie bands to impressively big names such as Lola Young, Orbital, Heaven 17, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Wheatus and Aswad.
CHALK has become synonymous with Brighton’s eclectic nightlife scene and is renowned as a venue space that responds dynamically to the energy of its crowds. Beyond the music and impressive lighting, CHALK also has a great social dynamic and their furniture is at the heart of that.
The nightclub set out exactly what they wanted for the seating and selected a deep buttoned back banquette seating, L-shaped in a plain upholstered style. The seating is serpentine sprung, therefore comfortable but also tactile and able to take the punishment of people enjoying themselves boisterously on a night out.
CHALK's atmosphere blends Brighton’s gritty, alternative edge with a polished, almost minimalist aesthetic. The seating fits in with this, black and subtle in the dark nightclub surrounding.
CHALK is not densely furnished, but the pieces that are there are deliberate and multipurpose. The furniture doesn't dominate the space, instead it supports movement, flow, and social interaction.
During high-capacity club nights, the space opens up to allow for an expansive dancefloor, while on smaller nights, seating clusters promote a more intimate, lounge-like feel.
Below you can see some photographs where one of our production team attaches zig zag springs, that together with spring wire will shape and support the main seating section ensuring there is no sag. Next the upholstery team prepare the fabric elements and the stools are meticulously checked for quality.
Conclusion
CHALK Brighton exemplifies how a venue’s atmosphere is not only created by its sound and visuals but also by its physical structure and furniture choices. By keeping its furnishings minimal, modular, and purposeful, they allow the focus to remain on the people, the music, and the shared experience. The venue adapts to its audience, night by night, proving that good furniture design in a nightclub setting is not about how much you have, but how well it works with the rhythm of the room.
